What To Do When Nothing’s New: Five Strategies for Success

By Susan Friedmann Look at that throng of people crowding the trade show floor. People come from all over the country to walk these aisles, eager eyes flitting from booth to booth, scanning the exhibits forwhat, exactly? Research shows that the vast majority 76% — come to trade shows to discover whats new and exciting. Maybe its a new product, or an innovative bit of technology, or a snazzy new application, or even an entire company that they were never aware of before. In an ideal world, every company would be constantly innovating, creating cutting edge products at phenomenal savings guaranteed to meet the customers needs. But as you and I know, business doesnt work that way. There are years when companies struggle to survive. Other years, it takes every ounce of effort just to maintain market position. And still other times, things might be fine, but the newest innovation is six, twelve, even eighteen months on the horizon. Is it even worth exhibiting during these times? Do the results of participating in a trade show while your companys in a lull phase justify the costs? Absolutely! In fact, it is precisely at these times when not participating could hurt your bottom line. Businesses rise and fall based on the strength of personal relationships. There is no better place to form new relationships and maintain and reinforce existing relationships than at a trade show. To do this, you need to create a positive impression with your exhibit. Demonstrate something new and exciting. Give the people what they want. How can you do that, you ask, when you dont have any new and exciting products? Here are five focus strategies the pros use when theyre in a similar situation: 1. Focus on Features: Purveyors of high-tech or complicated products often dont realize how little consumers know about the items they purchase. For example, take the average word processing program. It has countless features yet how many does the everyday user know about, much less use? Realize that your buyers may not even know what they dont know. Heres an opportunity to offer seminars, tutorials, or other interactive options centered on the more obscure features. This way, youre demonstrating that you value your customers and want them to make the most of your products/services. You could win their loyalty for life. 2. Focus on the Future: If the next big innovation is in sight, but youre not ready to spill the beans just yet, youve got an ideal opportunity to create a buzz. Some of the most effective excitement generating campaigns say little, if anything, about the new product, yet still create an impression that something noteworthy is about to happen. Signage, graphics, and literature all declaring Its Coming! let the public know that youre excited about the new product and that they should be too. 3. Focus on Finesse: Is there a way to make your product new and improved? Youll sometimes see this technique that Ive called the Proctor & Gamble strategy. Every so often, youll see a new and improved version of a product introduced laundry soap, shampoo, deodorant, and so on yet youd have to be a chemical engineer to notice any discernable difference between the old product and the new one. Still, consumers flock to the new, even if its only slightly different than the product they were previously satisfied with. If you cant change your product, what about the packaging? Glidden changed their paint can while still keeping their actual product, the paint, the same as it ever was, and saw sales rise as a result. 4. Focus on People: Great products wouldnt exist without great people. Consider putting a human face on your operation by centering your latest exhibit around the people who make, test, or use your product. Post Cereal, Reynolds Wrap, and NAPA auto parts have all used this strategy successfully during periods when their product line was fairly static and then carried the idea forward, altering it as needed to introduce new products! 5. Focus on Service: Many times, were asking buyers to make a huge investment to buy our products. If something goes wrong, the buyer worries that they will be left holding the bag on a very expensive mistake. Reassure consumers that theyll never be alone if there is a problem. Storage Sheds

By Marcus Peterson Storage sheds are buildings that are used primarily to store unused household articles that may be used sometime in future. They may contain various hardware articles, vessels, toys, sports goods, or junk. A normal sized shed with a floor area of 10 feet by 10 feet can easily house a garden tractor, but if the space within the storage shed is not enough, then there are other add-ons that can provide more space. The three main add-on sheds are corner sheds, horizontal sheds, and vertical sheds. Corner sheds can fit in a corner and are about 3 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet. Vertical and horizontal sheds fit into the main shed and they may be 5 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet. There can be more space-oriented additions to a storage shed like constructing a loft or using the space under the windows. Storage sheds usually contain the junk of the house or unneeded articles that one doesn’t feel like discarding yet. Dating and Social Networking

By Patsy O’Connor Remember the days when people would be tingling with excitement on a Wednesday at the thought of the weekend ahead? What would happen and what discos would be visited and what pubs would be trawled. Keep in mind the internet and mobile phones were in their early years back then. Usually people would do the groundwork during the week, chatting up and smooth talking the girls and boys. As usual it was the lads that did most of the chasing. Friday would arrive and school or work would come and go, and much of the gossip would be pointed towards the weekend ahead. The girls would be panicking over what to wear and the lads would usually try to find the most suitable clean items from the dirty laundry. Make up and hair cream would be applied and people would think nothing of walking or cycling 10 miles to go to a disco or bar in the hope of meeting that special person. Eyes wide with excitement and the thought of remaining sober long enough to be able to hold an intelligent conversation together proved quite a task in those days. The girls would clutch gigantic handbags, white knuckled at the thought that their future husband could be only steps away and the lads would be strutting about chest out like the proverbial peacock, pint of guinness in toe. Even in Ireland in the 80s matchmaking was done subconciously, even if people did not realise it. It still exists in some shape or form and people still flock from all over Ireland to the famous Lisdoonvarna festival where in the older days pig farmers and spinsters would flock from every corner of Ireland in the hope of meeting that one person to change their lives, and of course the music and the thought of pouring 20 pints of creamy guinness back ones neck. This brings me to the change in all aspects of relationships and dating throughout the late 90s and to the present day. A few years back I was sharing a house with a good friend of mine and computers were an issue for him and, the internet being a mind boggling mass of zeros and ones. By trade he was a tv and satellite installer and come Wednesday the repetitive strain injury would have been a possible issue due to the fact of numerous texts flying backwards and forwards in the hope of lining up a few unsuspecting young ladies for the weekend. With his thirst and skill for chatting up women of all walks of life he could obviously see the internet was an untapped source that could save him a small fortune hitting the clubs and bars, not to mention the multiple hangovers to deal with. After a period of time he mastered the internet and its huge realm of escapism became his new playground. Sometimes I would get up for a drink in the middle of the night and find a Homer Simpson shaped hole in my couch in the shape of this new Internet dating guru looking bleary eyed from spending numerous hours flirting on the computer. After a few years I decided to develop my own site, but aspects of the Internet change very fast and of course the internet is as fickle as a Roman mob. First of all I started to look at sites that seemed to be too over complex and obviously there are a huge number of pay sites out there, each seemed to offer you all singing all dancing sites with all the bells and whistles. You sign up for a basic profile and then you start getting bombarded with emails from women who look like they should appear on Spice Platinum. Alarm bells started going off in my head straight away. The in the middle of my analysis dating took a huge turn on the internet, free sites started appearing and paying seemed to be a thing of the past. In the middle of development I had to scrap some of my ideas as yet another phenomenon happened on the Internet, social networking sites started appearing. I studied a large number of them and huge volumes of people started to use these sites for social networking but upon further investigation I could see that basically people were using these friendship tools as a guise for dating. After many late nights and numerous bottles of Jameson I decided to stick to a simplified version of my original plan and trim down my site, make it free, keep it simple to use and easy on the eye. I have looked at hundreds of sites over the years, read numerous articles from CEOs who obviously are paper pushers who have no talent for design or flair and probably do not know the difference between html and PHP. I do not want to make millions from the Internet, I just wanted to design something that was easy to use and would give people a lot of enjoyment. I have also been lucky to have a girlfriend that has supported me through all this when most of my time and effort was focused on research, analysis and designing the site. Also I have been very lucky to find an incredible developer who managed to transform all my ideas into reality and for both of them I could not have created the product I wanted. The definition could help doctors identify and treat patients by getting them to lose weight, eat better and get more exercise. According to the NIH definition, metabolic disorder is present when a patient has any three or more symptoms: a waist measuring at least 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women; levels of triglycerides – fats that circulate in the blood – of at least 150 milligrams per deciliter; HDL levels of less than 40 mgs in men and less than 50 mgs in women; blood pressure of at least 135/80; and blood sugar of at least 110 mgs. Dr. Margo Denke, a professor of medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said ”This is one syndrome that is exquisitely lifestyle-sensitive – it’s an area where we can get people to pay attention and if they do pay attention, theyre big rewards,” she said. Pickup and Seduction – How NOT to Trigger a Woman’s Sense of Rejection

By Vincent DiCarlo By now, it is pretty well accepted that women like a man who is a little bit cocky. If you are interested in dating more women, then pay close attention. It’s true. If a man is confident, bordering on cocky, he will present himself as a challenge, and we all know women love challenges. Other times, a man can go too far with this behavior and make a woman feel so insecure, she feels underqualified. Sometimes going to far with any technique, no matter how good, will not get your desired results. In the case of acting too arrogant, a woman will sometimes feel so rejected, she starts to pull away. What happened is, you triggered her “Auto-Rejection Mechanism”. She interpreted one of your actions as rejection, and as such, she responded in a way to shield herself from further rejection. Metaphorically speaking, you stuck in the knife, and she was merely attempting to prevent you from twisting it. It’s a natural response to that type of thing. It may look like she’s shutting you down, and isn’t attracted, but in reality it’s a completely rational response to your mis-calibration. There are a couple of very common situations in which a woman’s auto-rejection mechanism is triggered. These are: 1. Using cocky humor in a miscalibrated or overly serious way. It is very important to blend your humor with a very warm vibe. Your body language and tonality should be implying that you are busting on her in a very caring way. Oh, and be sure to smile. 2. Showing disapproval when you are in your screening and qualification phase. If she is attracted and at the point where she is talking about herself in an attempt to win you over, let her. Show approval and be genuinely interested in what she has to say. Don’t punish her for opening up to you and trying to win you over. 3. Creating an opportunity for physical escalation and not following through. This is very common, and actually we get a LOT of questions about this phenomenon. Sometimes a guy will have a girl ready to go, ready for sex, and he will either escalate too slowly or not at all. Out of the blue, the woman stops returning his calls. If you produce a window of opportunity for physical escalation, make it happen. 4. Not calling her after sex, and expecting her to follow up. After sex, sometimes a guy will feel as if he has won, and a girl should now persue him. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. If a woman opens up to you physically, she needs to be comforted in a way that doesn’t make you seem like a player. (That is, if you wish to make the relationship go further than a one night stand…) If you feel you have gotten into this type of cycle, do not fear. There are remedies for it. 1. Spot it early. If you notice that she may be pulling away because of underqualification, that is a sure sign of the Auto-Rejection Mechanism. 2. Falsely disqualify yourself. Once you know that she is definitely attracted but a bit scared of being rejected by you, tell her something like this: “You know, I think I may be too much of a bad guy, and the last thing I want to do is break your heart.” This will set up a challenge for her to conquer and will cause her to argue the other side of your point. She will once again become interested. 3. Qualify her for not playing games. Tell her: “You know, it’s really refreshing to know a girl who isn’t into playing games with guys. You seem very up front, honest and confident in going after those things that you really want.” This will give her a bit more confidence in showing her interest in you. It will also stop her in her tracks from playing hard to get. Build New Habits — Payday Will Come –

By Don Monteith Feeling that it never works is not a good excuse. You may even remember last year not getting past February. GOOD intentions. NO success. Dont quit! Every year has a new beginning for each of us. Keep on working at it. NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS You knew that was coming. Wipe the slate clean for 2004. Most of us had a few UPS and some had more DOWNS. There is real power in your mind. Think positives even when it is most difficult. Negatives are destroyers that pull us down into the abyss. Actually, you can make resolutions EVERY day. Hop out of bed with a great attitude. Begin by saying, Good morning, God, what are you and I going to do today? It may surprise you. Negative folk say, Good God, its morning! You decide! DONT QUIT I know! Last year just left you defeated. Every change you were going to make fell by the wayside. None of your resolutions got done. Maybe you OVER reached. Be more reasonable. Dont expect big leaps. Bite off the challenges in small chunks rather than going for the boulder. Success is closer than you think. One step at a time. You can become the happier, healthier person that you envision. All of us like to improve. Theres a sincere desire to learn. To stick with our new diet. To work out at the gym or go to aerobics. Walk a mile each morning or night. Our goal is to eat right; live right; exercise and be our very best. OVER ZEALOUS Suddenly, Im going to change my habits. Our resolutions fill a complete page. All the things we havent been doing. Beginning tomorrow. You have just programmed failure into your New Years resolutions. Too much at once. None of us can handle it. Put down one or two life changing challenges. Maybe you can take on another one or two in another month. Dont overwhelm your psychic all at the beginning. Stretch your goals over time. First, write down your new passions. A full page of resolutions is too much. Select those with the greatest benefit. Leave the others for now. Dont expect perfection. Good intentions pave the road but you need to allow for a detour along the way. BUILDING NEW HABITS Your real goal is to develop new habits. Replace the old ones. NO exercise turns into some exercise. Eating too much turns into pushing away from the table sooner. Drink more water, less cola. Putting your spouse before the children or grands. Doing fun things together. Go to the movies. Out to dinner. Long weekends to the mountains. Dont expect old habits to suddenly disappear. They are still lurking. Trying to get back into first place. Wanting to mess up your plan. Few things are more rewarding than reaching your goal. Even if it takes longer than you expected. Moving in the right direction counts for success. Reach for incremental mile markers. Each step takes us closer to our destination. PAYDAY IS COMING — Keep that in mind. Not necessarily money. A much BIGGER benefit. You quit SMOKING because (you dont want to increase cancer odds; your breathe is cleaner; clothes no longer smell stale; eat in nicer places; kicked a bad habit, etc.) Go on a DIET because (clothes look nicer; you look nicer; you feel better about yourself; cost less for food; and..) Quit drinking because. (Dont want DWI risk; no more acting a fool; risky addiction and family loss; and) Bad habits are hard to break. Only YOU can make the decision. No one can do it for you until you decide. Many times our bad habits are patterns of behavior. Smoking gives us a break and often it comes with dinner and a drink. Must be a social issue. Everyone else is doing it so we do it to be accepted within our social group. SUCCESS TEAM All of us need support when striving to reach goals. Find those with the same mindset and desire to change habits. Working out is always easier in a group. To quit drinking is easier with NON drinkers. Non smokers help us kick the nicotine habit. Cheerleaders are needed. Keep it up! Dont quit. Hold on to your goals. Accountability keeps most of us on track. Do something nice for yourself when you reach incremental levels. Buy yourself a new suit or a new dress when you drop a full size. Make every step a recognizable achievement. Eat at a new restaurant. Go to the movies. Treat yourself to a massage. Relax and enjoy the NEW you. One last admonition. HAVE FUN! In the end (December 2005) you can look back with pride on the success you have enjoyed in the last 12 months. ACTION TIP: A better YOU and ME is worth the investment. Set reasonable goals. Bite off in small incremental pieces. Look for the BIG pay off. Get a support TEAM. Making Sure You Always Have People Who Want To Give You Money Knocking Down Your Door

By Gary Ruplinger The lifeblood of any online business (and offline for that matter) is its customers. If you dont have people willing to give you money, youre not going to be in business very long. Which is why you should be taking daily action to make sure that youre getting new customers to your site. I actually got this idea from the great copywriter Dan Kennedy, and this has probably been one of the most powerful ideas Ive ever implemented in my business. While its easy to automate tasks like running pay per click that will keep bringing new people to your site, its important that you actually take the time to take one action everyday that will continue to bring in new customers. The reason you need to do this everyday, even if youve got more customers than you can handle, is that if you dont do it everyday, it wont become a habit. If it doesnt become a habit, eventually things will slow down, and then youll need to go into crisis mode to get a new windfall of customers. Then youll stop trying to get more customers in because you have a lot again, and the viscous cycle will complete. Get a Raise: How To Ask Your Boss For More Money

By Neen James How many people do you know who think they deserve a pay rise, but are too scared to ask? You might even be one of those people! Why is it we are afraid to ask for what we believe we are worth? Its time to stop worrying and start asking, but before you charge into your bosss office give yourself the best chance of success with these helpful tipsthen book that meeting with the boss. Do an audit. Make a huge list of all your achievements in your current role. Think about where you add value to your organisation and how you have grown the business. List both demonstrable results such as statistics, sales figures, client testimonials and reports as well as those things that can be a little more difficult to quantify, such as improving staff morale. Know what youre worth. Find out what similar jobs to yours are paying in the market. Look at the same industry and other industries to determine what your market value is and what type of additional package benefits are on offer for similar roles. Create your ideal package. Make a list of what you would like to receive in salary, car allowance, employee benefits, superannuation and time off. Look at the total dollar value of the package dont focus only on the individual components. Consider the organisational situation. Be aware of how the organisation is performing before you approach your manager. If times are tough, your proposal is less likely to be considered but if the company is performing well your manager might be more open to your request. Book a time. Make an appointment with your manager and let him or her know that the agenda will be your remuneration package. Try to schedule this appointment for early in the day so your manager is not distracted by competing priorities and you are not spending a nervous day waiting for the appointment time. Practice. Go over your presentation in your mind and perhaps even with a friend or colleague. Know what it is you want to say and why you believe you deserve this raise. Objection! List all of your managers potential objections and consider how you would respond to them. Be calm and positive. Take a few deep breaths before the meeting and remind yourself of why you deserve this raise and the positive impact it will have on your life. Dont approach your manager timidly or they wont believe you are worth the raise. Believe in yourself and your achievements. Be aware of body language. Make sure you sit forward in your chair, your shoulders are straight, sit forward in your chair and make eye contact and smile. Try to appear relaxed and comfortable not nervous and fidgety. Build your case. Before you launch into your presentation about what you want and why you deserve a raise, ask your manager these questions: How do you feel I have been performing over the past few months? Do you agree I have added value/sales/benefits to this organisation? Are you happy with my performance to date? Your managers responses to these questions will allow you to understand what his or her opinion of your performance is and help you to position your request in light of their responses. Be assertive. Use positive assertive, not aggressive, language when you are making your case for why you deserve this increase; dont moan or complain. Talk about the benefits to the company and to you. Dont blink, dont look away. When you do tell your manager the total package figure you would like to receive, dont blink and dont look away. Hold their gaze and remain calm. Allow your manager to respond. Remember, youve been thinking about this and putting together your proposal for some time this is the first your manager has heard about it, give him or her time to respond and process your request. Dont talk while they are responding, let them talk through their thoughts and issues without interruption. Allow yourself to sit in silence if required. Dont try to fill any silence with further explanation or justification. Be flexible. If appropriate, let your manager know that you are prepared to be flexible in how the raise is provided to you perhaps is can be phased in, include a bonus or one-off payment or involve changing the structure of your current package. Agree on a response timeframe. If your manger cant give you an answer immediately, agree on a timeframe within which he or she will come back to you with an answer.
